With more than 40 years of nursing experience, including acute care settings, medical records review, infection prevention, long term care, and teaching nursing classes, Connie Schaefer, RN CLNC has excelled as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant out of her own business, Connie Schaefer Legal Nurse & Associates LLC since 2021. Through this firm, she utilizes her combined nursing experience and expertise to help attorneys win medical legal cases—spanning medical record tampering, independent medical examinations, poorly designed medical devices, civil and criminal litigation, and COVID-related cases.
Prior to this appointment, Ms. Schaefer was active as the Director of Nursing at Winfield Senior Living Community, an infection control coordinator at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas, and a consultant for Kansas Infection Control Consultants for Infection Control at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Armed with a degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she started in the intensive care unit, where she learned to take care of critical patients, and also worked as an infection prevention nurse in a large metro hospital, where she said she “saw things that people should not see,” which affected her negatively and led her to leave the role. After decades as an employee, accruing 42 years in nursing, she wanted to pursue something in which she was her own boss and could work remotely. After searching for nursing jobs online for six to eight hours a day, she had a sudden, strange thought to reach out to attorneys and offer her expertise to medical cases. Within a series of calls, she was placed on a conference call with a roomful of attorneys and paralegals, who interviewed her on the spot and learned of her extensive career in a large metro hospital, chart extracting, analyzing records, and infection prevention. Since then, she has worked closely with attorneys, helping to review medical records and providing her professional opinion for a wide range of cases. She has been proud of becoming a business leader with her valued contribution to the legal field.
In addition to her primary roles and responsibilities, Ms. Schaefer recently served as an expert witness in a federal case in Kansas City, and previously presented at the SHEA Conference, associated with Via Christi St. Francis, on ways to eliminate blood culture contamination. She is also active as the president of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology and was a previous member of the National Hospice Association. Looking toward the future, she has no interest in slowing down; she will soon be teaching at a local hospital, guiding students on legal documentation and interviewed on an internationally known legal nurse platform.
